The Perspicuity of Genesis
Some people, when the hear the term perspicuity, think immediately of the last time they sweat too much while exercising. But what does perspicuity mean, and why is it important?
To define perspicuity, let us ponder the celebrated words of Luther in his timeless classic, The Bondage of the Will: “If you speak of the internal clearness, no man sees one iota in the Scriptures, but he that hath the Spirit of God. . . .
If you speak of the external clearness, nothing whatever is left obscure or ambiguous; but all things that are in the Scriptures, are by the Word brought forth into the clearest light, and proclaimed to the whole world.” In other words, Scripture speaks about the creation of all things in the “clearest light.”
Please join us as we apply the doctrine of the perspicuity of Scripture to the early chapters of Genesis.

Your famous scientists don’t agree with my favorite scientists. Guess who’s wrong? April 22, 2010

Your scientist doesn’t agree with my scientist, so yours must be wrong. You, yours, mine…pick your pronoun. It doesn’t really matter.
Every time a scientist with a creationist worldview (BUT, IT’S NOT SCIENCE!!! ) puts out the word on what they have learned, discovered, researched, concluded, a scientist with an evolution/atheist worldview (point, an atheistic worldview is not science either) puts out a rebuttal or vice versa.
In other words, two well studied groups with very different starting points are going to end up reaching different conclusions. No surprise there. (more…)

This list ought to keep the young earth creation bashers busy for awhile.
Kudos to Don Batten, PhD for putting together such a list – 101 evidences for a young age of the earth and the universe.
Dr. Batten got his Ph.D. from the University of Sydney. He worked for 20 years as a research horticulturalist with the NSW Department of Agriculture.
Here are five, one from each category…for the rest go here. (more…)
Fish-eating-a-fish fossil. Photoshopped? April 18, 2010

I had never seen this fossil before. I still haven’t. But I saw a picture of it last month in a presentation and decided to look it up.
No doubt folks all over will say it was photoshopped, rigged in some way, anything but what it is – evidence of sudden and immediate death of the fish doing the eating and the other fish who was no doubt trying to stay alive. Good luck with that exercise in futility, eh?
How is this fossil to be explained? I mean, the fish eating side of the equation must have kept his/her mouth open for a long long time. And the being eaten side had to stay in place, too. Or is there a more reasonable explanation?
And while we’re at it, why are there marine fossils found up on top of mountains?
Oh, and another question. You have heard it said that there is not enough water for a world-wide flood. I learned that if all the mountains fell into the sea and the below sea-level valleys were filled in, there would be enough water to cover the entire planet to 2.7 km high. Hmm…sounds to me like there was enough water for a world-wide flood, no?
And we have forensic evidence of such an event to boot?
Coded information – a sign of intelligence or not? April 16, 2010

One is an astronomer who thinks that any code they pick up, no matter how tiny or unsophisticated is evidence that there is intelligence behind it. His/her thinking, “coded information does not come about by chance.”
The other is a biologist who thinks that the detailed information that can be found in each cell down to the molecular level with enough information to fill a library did NOT have an intelligent source because, well the only way it could come about is by chance.
Which scientist has the right idea?
What Calvin said about Creation, Part I April 15, 2010

Over the next several days, there will be some posts about what some famous and influential Christians said about creation. Since I’m a Reformed Christian, I will kick off with several Reformed scholars. Today, I begin with John Calvin. Calvin was a prolific writer. He wrote a systematic theology; The Institutes of the Christian Religion, a number of commentaries from books of the Bible, and his sermons were widely published. That he had a tremendous influence upon Presbyterianism and other Reformed Churches cannot be understated. What did Calvin say about Genesis 1? Here are some excerpts of his views:
For it is not without significance that he divided the making of the universe into six days [Gen 1:31], even though it would have been no more difficult for him to have completed it in one moment the whole work together in all its details than to arrive at its completion by a progression of all this sort. Institutes of the Christian Religion, J.T. McNeill, editor, Vol I,p. 182. From this we see that Calvin would not fall into the Day-Age or theistic evolution camps. He was a young earth creationist.
They will not refrain from guffaws when they are informed that but little more than five thousand years have passed since the creation of the universe. Ibid., vol 2, p. 925. Today, there are plenty of guffaws concerning Calvin’s view of the age of the earth.
More on Calvin tomorrow.
